Alex Otti, governor of Abia, says he supports President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.
Punch reports that Otti spoke on Sunday while receiving Orji Kalu, senator representing Abia north; and Chris Adighije, a former lawmaker; at his residence in Isiala-Ngwa south LGA.
Since May 2023 when he assumed office, Tinubu has focused on liberalising Nigeria’s economy. He ended the petrol subsidy regime and floated the naira for exchange rate unification.
The president also announced the ‘Nigeria First’ policy, which aims to prioritise local goods and services.

During the meeting, Kalu commended the governor for the state’s development and also sought support for Tinubu.
Responding, Otti said beyond politics, he shares Tinubu’s economic views and will continue to support him in that regard.
“When you talk about supporting President Tinubu, the president and I are very good friends and our friendship predates party politics and current positions,” he said.

“We agree on so many issues; as it is natural, we know where we disagree. But, when you talk about the economy, what Mr president is doing has always been my position for a long time.
“I urge people to go back and read my columns at the back of ThisDay newspaper some years back, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where I said that it was time to remove fuel subsidy when off-takers were rejecting crude shipped to them.
“So, it requires somebody with courage to remove that subsidy, and I support it. We have behaved in an irresponsible manner for a very long time.
“When you have years of irresponsible behaviour, the correction would be tough, challenging, and painful. It is the correction that we are going through now. If we don’t lose faith, we will eventually get it right.

“So, talking about supporting the president, it is a no-brainer. I will continue to support him because it is the same administration.”
Kalu said Otti has “done well” for the state by fixing roads and improving the standard of living.
“The state will continue to grow under your leadership,” he said.
Kalu added that when the people are satisfied with a governor, they will support him to continue to lead.
