Suspected armed robbers, on Thursday, attacked a branch of Wema Bank in Ise-Ekiti, Ise/Orun local government area of the state, killing a security guard attached to the bank.

The robbers were said to have come into the town in two vehicles through Ikere-Ekiti road.

They shot endlessly into the air to scare away residents, customers as well as bank officials.

The robbers, who arrived the town some minutes past 2:00pm, carted away an unspecified amount of money in the operation which lasted about 30 minutes.

Caleb Ikechukwu, the state’s police public relations officer, confirmed the incident, saying the robbers attacked the bank with dynamites to gain entry.

“I can confirm to you that a bank was robbed in Ise-Ekiti this afternoon,” he said.

“The robbers broke the security door with an explosive material, precisely, dynamite.

“Our men are on their trail and we shall ensure that none of them escapes.

“Members of the public are advised to go about their normal duties and be rest assured that we are ready to protect lives and property at all times.”

The state has witnessed frequent cases of armed robberies in the past few years. In August, three policemen and some persons were shot dead by robbers who invaded a commercial bank in Ilasa-Ekiti.
