The Lagos government has commenced the demolition of “illegal buildings” at the trade fair complex located in the Ojo LGA of the state.
The exercise, which commenced on Thursday, was carried out by officials of Lagos ministry of physical planning, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, and the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority.
Speaking during the exercise, Oluyinka Olumide, Lagos commissioner for physical planning and urban development, said the current layout of the Lagos trade fair complex is “chaotic”.
Olumide said the demolition exercise is a “response” from the state government pertaining to the current state of the complex.

He noted that while the land of the trade fair complex belongs to the federal government, Lagos state that has the authority to determine the planning and layout of structures.
He disclosed that the state government has ordered that all current construction within the complex should be stopped pending proper layout approval.
The Lagos commissioner said the authorities of the complex are expected to meet with the state government on the proper layout permit.

“What happened here today is a response from the Lagos state government,” he said.
“If you recall that some couple of weeks ago, some estates were declared illegal. What was the reason? It is primarily because they have not gotten layout approval.
“This complex is more than 332 hectares, which is more than due for layout permit.
“The take home for today is that all construction must stop immediately and within one week, we expect the authority (trade fair management) to come to our office with their layout plan and the approval of individual buildings.”
