Walid Jibrin, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) board of trustees, says he would have resigned if the supreme court ruling on the chairmanship of the party had favoured Ali Modu Sheriff.

The supreme court had on Wednesday recognised Ahmed Makarfi as chairman of the PDP after a protracted legal tussle that led to the emergence of two factions.

Reacting through a statement issued in Kaduna on Thursday, Jibrin said he was overjoyed with the victory of the Makarfi faction at the apex court.

He said the judgment was timely as it would enable the PDP to put its house in order before the 2019 general elections.

According to the BoT chairman, Makarfi’s victory effectively saved the party from extinction as many would have left if Sheriff had been handed the reins of the PDP.

“I would have resigned as PDP BOT chairman if Sheriff had won,” he said.

‎Jibrin said since the crisis within the PDP had been resolved, party members should work together towards achieving a common goal.
