Iheanacho scores last-gasp penalty on debut to seal Celtic win

Kelechi Iheanacho scored a penalty in added time to seal a 2-1 win for Celtic in their Scottish Premier League (SPL) match against Kilmarnock on Sunday.

The Super Eagles attacker made the difference for Celtic on his debut for the SPL defending champions despite starting the match from the bench.

Celtic were uninspiring for most of the encounter and needed to dig deep to claim all three points to send the Bhoys back to the top of the league.

Daizen Maeda headed Celtic into the lead on 56 minutes after both sides endured a tepid first half, before David Watson restored parity with another header seven minutes from time, and the home side looked set to settle for a point.

Iheanacho, who came on as a 70th-minute substitute, broke home fans’ hearts at Rugby Park six minutes into added time, converting the VAR-awarded spot-kick to snatch victory for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

After the match, Rodgers said 28-year-old Iheanacho, who joined the club on a free transfer after the transfer deadline day, was the player with the confidence to dispatch the penalty.

He said the former Manchester City academy product would “really contribute” to the team once fully fit.
