Abdullahi Sule, governor of Nasarawa state, has lauded Government College, Keffi, on its 70th anniversary, saying he is proud of the institution.
The governor said this when a delegation of alumni of the college, the Keffi Old Boys Association (KOBA), led by Bello Salim, its acting president general, visited him at Government House, Lafia.
The delegation briefed him on the plans for the 70th anniversary of the college slated for next year.
In a statement in Kaduna, John Shiklam, national publicity secretary of KOBA, said the governor assured the delegation that the government of Nasarawa will support the old boys in preparations marking the 70th anniversary of the college.
Sule described the college as a great institution which he is proud of, and commended KOBA for supporting their alma mata.
“Government College, Keffi, is a great institution that we are proud of. I am familiar with how great that institution is. We thank you for keeping the flag flying,” he said.
“For the 70th anniversary of the college, the state government will support KOBA to make it successful At the appropriate time, we will sit down with the committee after I must have sat down with the executive members to be able to give you a date.
“We will invite the committee, maybe the chairman of the committee, along with some members of the committee and then we can see what role you expect the government of Nasarawa state to play.”
Salim, who was represented by Umaru Azores, one time secretary to the Nasarawa state government, solicited the support of the government to celebrate the landmark achievements of the college which was established in 1949.
He said a planning committee had been set up for the event which comes up next year.
Salim added that the event will also be used to raise funds for the completion of the e-library project and the hall of fame, the foundation of which was laid in 2009 by the late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua, a product of the college.
Salim commended the Nasarawa government for renovating the college and appealed to the governor to upgrade science laboratories and technical workshops in the school to boost science and technical education which the college was noted for.
“Government College, Keffi, is blessed with woodwork and metal workshops and science laboratories. Currently they have been left under utilised. We urged the government to please renovate and re-equip them for the benefit of the college and other institutions in the area,” he said.
Among members of the delegation were Edward Ujege, chairman, organising committee, Muhammed Ibrahim, national secretary; Mohammed Lawal, treasurer and Godwin Ashikeni.
