It’s because I’m shy

When asked to speak publicly, it is not bizarre that certain people mumble under their breath as they manage to get the words out.

They sound something like this-

‘I’m a very shy person so I’m just going to try to say this the best way I can’

Now this goes for those that say those words looking at their feet, trying not to make eye contact and also for those who speakthe words with a boisterous voice and a spring in their step.

It seems that some use these ‘lines’ to serve as the perfect alibi for a soft landing and perhaps expedite acceptance from the hitherto analytical glares of their audience.

It amuses me when people say

‘I am an introvert so I’m naturally shy’ or ‘You’re not shy at all, a real extrovert’

Being an introvert and being shy are often perceived as one and the same. Nothing could be farther from true.

Some extroverts are shy too!

Being an introvert or extrovert is about where we prefer to refuel or gain energy. Either from the inner world of thoughts, interests, ideas and imaginations (introvert) or from the outer world of activities, excitement, people and things (extrovert)

Shyness however, is a form of Social anxiety or phobia. Thankfully, it can be overcome.

A fear of being judged, misunderstood or criticized contributes largely to social anxiety and shyness.

When you have the chance to present yourself, permit others to see you ‘as you are’

Be proud of your difference. Being genuine and vulnerable is often the quality that others will appreciate the most about you.

We are unable to lean into the discomfort of vulnerability and therefore limit the fullness of those important experiences such as Love, Belonging, Creativity, Joy etc. that are borne from uncertainty.

Are you unable to interact freely because you’re shy?
