EFCC to Fayose: Immunity doesn’t stop investigation
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has defended its decision to freeze the account of Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state.
Fayose had accused the commission of illegality, alleging that the federal government was behind the act.
“If you want to fight corruption, you do so based on the rule of law. I am a sitting governor and under section 308 of the Nigerian constitution I enjoy immunity,” he said.
But Wilson Uwujaren, spokesman of the agency, said Fayose’s complaints were unnecessary, adding that the EFCC acted constitutionally.
Uwujaren said immunity clause does not give protection from investigation.
“Under the constitution, there are four categories of people who have immunity. The immunity applies to prosecution. Nothing says he cannot be investigated,” he told TheCable.
Uwujaren said there had been suspicious transactions on the account, therefore, “the onus is to create a post no debit on that account”.
