Imo assembly elects new speaker — fourth time in three years

Emeka Nduka has been elected as the new speaker of the Imo house of assembly.

He was elected on Monday during plenary.

Nduka, lawmaker representing Ehime Mbano constituency, is the fourth speaker of the Imo assembly in three years.

His election followed the resignation of Kennedy Ibeh, member representing Obowo constituency, who was sworn in as speaker in November 2021.

Ibeh resigned during an emergency plenary session at the state house of assembly complex on Monday.

Aside from Ibeh, the Imo house of assembly has also had Chiji Collins, member representing Isiala Mbano constituency, and Paul Emeziem, member representing Onuimo LGA, as its speakers.

Collins, who was elected in June 2019, was impeached in November 2020 following allegations of financial impropriety, high-handedness, gross misconduct levelled against him.

Collins was succeeded by Emeziem, who was also impeached over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The newly sworn-in speaker is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
