Mohammed Abubakar, the new governor of Bauchi state, has alleged that Isa Yuguda, his predecessor, emptied the treasury of the state before leaving office.
Yuguda was in charge of Bauchi for eight years after serving as minister of state for transport and later minister of aviation during the administration of former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
Speaking after taking the oath of office on Friday, Abubakar said he would need time to revive the state and appealed to the people to exercise patience with his administration.
“The people will have to give us time to correct all wrongs perpetrated by the PDP administration. The people have to understand and be patient with us because it’s not going to be an easy task,” he said.
“Bauchi state civil servants have not been paid their salaries for March, April and May while state and local government pensioners are being owed about N12bn pension arrears by the past government.
“But we will do everything possible to bring this state out of the dungeon it is in now.”
He thanked the people for their support.
Rabi Umar, the acting chief judge in the state, swore-in Abubakar alongside Nuhu Gidado, at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium in the state capital.
