Ajibola Famurewa, executive chairman, Osun state universal basic education board (SUBEB), says the government plans to build perimeter fences in public schools.

Famurewa said this at an enlightenment programme organised by the ministry of information and civic engagement on Wednesday in Ilesa, Osun state.

While noting that the initiative was part of security measures adopted by the state to ensure the safety of pupils, students and their teachers, he said the issue of banditry affecting schools also informed the decision.

“Government will soon commence building of perimeter fences in all the public schools. This is part of governor Oyetola’s security plans to ensure the safety of our children, who are the leaders of tomorrow,” NAN quoted him to have said.

“Although Osun is a peaceful state, the spate of kidnapping, especially students, in some parts of the country is scary. Hence, the need for government to put security measures in place in all public schools.”

The development comes amid concerns over attacks on schools and communities across the country in recent times, leading to abductions and killings.

Aside from Osun, other governors — including Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti and Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna — have also called for improved security across schools.

While Fayemi has advocated the use of technology, el-Rufai has suggested establishing military camps near schools to discourage attacks.
