The Bayero University Kano (BUK) has terminated the appointments of 30 contract lecturers.
The university management said they had to let go of the lecturers over the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS).
The federal government introduced the IPPIS to address irregularities in the manner lecturers were paid but the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has continuously kicked against it.
Recently, Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, said the government lost N800 billion to the old system in which university lecturers were being paid.
Sai’du Ahmad Dukawa, one of the lecturers whose appointment was terminated, told TheCable that it was based on a directive from the federal government.
“I have been on contract with the university for 7 years and my contract is renewed every two years,” Dukawa said.
“The contract would have been renewed next year but it was terminated yesterday.”
Muhammad Yahuza Bello (pictured), vice-chancellor, said the affected lecturers were given a 40-day notice.
“It is a condition to enrol staff in the salary payment platform of IPPIS,” the vice-chancellor said.
“The federal government made it clear that except the university would pay such staff from its internally generated revenue which we cannot.”
