Israel has agreed to 60-day ceasefire with Hamas, says Trump

Donald Trump

United States President Donald Trump says Israel has agreed to a 60-day ceasefire with Hamas.

Trump announced the breakthrough in a statement via his Truth Social media platform late Tuesday night.

He said during the ceasefire, the US will work with all parties to end the war.

“The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring Peace, will deliver this final proposal,” Trump added.

“I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.”

There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials on Trump’s post.

Talks on a temporary ceasefire have been discussed over the past several months but they have been deadlocked — largely over the terms for what happens at the end of that truce.

Israel demands that it maintains the ability to resume fighting, while Hamas wants the temporary ceasefire to become permanent.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli prime minister, is scheduled to visit the White House next week.

Trump said he will be “very firm” with the prime minister on the need to end the war in Gaza.

The first phase of a ceasefire deal reached between Israel and Hamas in January suffered a setback in March after the Jewish nation launched a surprise attack in Gaza, killing over 300.

Netanyahu said he authorised the attack because Hamas repeatedly “refused to release our hostages”.
