European football governing body, UEFA, has announced that the 2020 Champions League final will be staged at Turkey’s Istanbul stadium. The UEFA Executive Committee took the decision at its meeting held today in Kiev, Ukraine.

The Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadı is the country’s largest stadium and is home to the Turkish national team. This will be the stadium’s second UCL final, the first being the UCL 2005 final between Liverpool and AC Milan, famous for a stunning Liverpool comeback from 3-0 down to beat AC Milan on penalties, winning their fifth UCL crown in the process.

Other decisions taken at the meeting include the staging of the 2020 Europa League final at the Arena Gdansk in Poland, while the 2020 women’s Champions League final will be staged at the Austria Arena in Vienna, Austria.

Next year’s Champions League final will be played at Atlético Madrid’s newly built Wanda Metropolitano stadium, while this season’s final is due to be held on Saturday at the Olympic stadium in Kiev.
