‘It is avoidable’ — Gbaja mourns victim of Lagos train accident

Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives, has expressed his condolences to the Lagos government and families of the victims of the train accident that happened in the state.

In the early hours of Thursday, a train collided with a bus conveying staff of the Lagos government with six people confirmed dead.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the driver of the BRT bus was attempting to cross the rail track when the oncoming train ran into it.

Fidet Okhiria, managing director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), had said the bus driver is to be blamed for the accident.

He said the driver had attempted to cross the rail track and beat the train, while other cars had stopped.

Reacting to the incident in a statement on his Facebook page, Gbajabiamila described the accident as “regrettable” and “avoidable.”

He expressed grief over the death of innocent people going to their legitimate businesses.

The lawmaker representing Surulere 1 federal constituency of Lagos also prayed for the peaceful rest of the souls of those that lost their lives and quick recovery for the injured.

Meanwhile, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, said blood donors were needed for the victims while he called on Lagos residents to come to their aid.

The governor also announced the suspension of his political campaign to mourn the victims of the accident.
