The house of representatives committee on disability has invited the Nigerian management of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), an international fast-food restaurant chain.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Bashiru Dawodu, chairman of the committee, said KFC management is expected to appear before the panel’s investigative hearing.

Last month, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) shut down KFC at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, over discrimination against Debola Daniel, son of Gbenga Daniel, former governor of Ogun state.

Debola, via his social media handle, narrated his experience at the MMIA branch of KFC.

He said the restaurant had stopped him and his family from entering, stating that “no wheelchairs were allowed”.

The fast-food outlet later apologised to Debola.

“We have embarked on efforts to address the situation,” KFC had said.

‘IT IS UNACCEPTABLE’

Dawodu said the committee would not accept any discriminatory treatment against persons with disability.

“We have invited KFC and there will be an investigation which will be based on house rules,” Dawodu said.

The lawmaker said Debola’s treatment at the airport “sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities” in Nigeria.

“This treatment is unacceptable and goes against the principles of inclusivity and respect. And it is a violation of Disability Act,” he said.

“As the chairman of the house of representatives committee on disability matters, I strongly condemn such actions.

“Denying individuals with disabilities access to public spaces is not only disrespectful but also undermines ongoing efforts to implement the Disability Act. The committee is duty-bound to investigate this issue and other related matters.

“The case of Mr Adebola Daniel is one of millions of other unreported cases of such abuses and injustices against people with disabilities.

“This will no longer be tolerated by the governments at all levels. Any establishment within the shore of our country irrespective of owners’ status should take note. Enough is enough.”

The legislator said the discrimination against people with disabilities prohibition Act 2018, safeguards the rights of persons with disabilities, noting that compliance with the law has been low.

He said it is “imperative” for all stakeholders, including businesses to adhere to the provisions of the law.

“Our committee is committed to engaging with communities to kick start the full implementation of the disability act,” he added.
