Pope Francis has warned that the uncontrolled or untrammelled use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) could destroy humanity.

AI is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines. It is a field of study in computer science that develops and studies intelligent machines.

The technology is increasingly gaining mainstream traction and is now being deployed by some businesses and market segments.

According to Alfred Martins, Lagos Catholic Archbishop, who relayed the message of the pope to the faithful at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Francis spoke on Monday while celebrating Mass to usher in the New Year and to mark the annual World Day of Peace.

“I would like to address God’s people, the various nations, heads of states and governments, leaders of the different religions, the civil society and all the men and women of our time, in order to offer my fervent good wishes for peace,” the pope was quoted as saying.

“Conversely, if advancement in science and technology is making it possible to exercise hitherto unprecedented control over reality, it places in human hands a vast array of options including some that may pose risks to humanity.

“The uncontrolled use of artificial intelligence is capable of destabilising the world in every facets.

“With the regulation of its use, AI will promote humanity, peace, commerce, agriculture and curtail wars in the society, while its abuse will endanger peace, commerce, agriculture and engulf the world.”

The pope urged the human populace to act swiftly on the use of AI, saying it is not the responsibility of a few but of the world.

He said human intelligence is an expression of the dignity with which people have been endowed by the creator, and that when they deploy technology to make the earth a favourable dwelling, they carry out God’s plan.

“That positive outcome will only be achieved if we show ourselves capable of acting responsibly and respect such fundamental human values as inclusion, transparency, security, equity, privacy and reliability,” he added.
