Stephen Bannon, a former White House chief strategist, says US President Donald Trump will get a third term.

Bannon served briefly in the White House under Trump’s first term.

In an interview with The Economist on Thursday, Bannon said “Trump is going to be president in ’28, and people ought to just get accommodated with that”.

The US 22nd Amendment forbids a president from seeking office for more than two four-year terms, regardless of whether they were consecutive.

“There’s many different alternatives,” Bannon claimed when asked if the law would be disregarded.

“At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is but there is a plan.”

Bannon said Trump’s re-election is necessary because the US needs him, adding, “We have to finish what we started.”

He described Trump as a “vehicle of divine providence” and an “instrument of divine will”.

“We need him for at least one more term, and he’ll get that in ’28,” Bannon added.

“The only way President Trump wins in 2028 and continues to stay in office is by the will of the American people, and the will of the American people is what the Constitution embodies.”

Barely a week into his second term, Republican lawmakers began to propose the idea of keeping Trump in office for a third term.

Subsequently, Trump himself began to publicly toy with the idea.

In March, the president said he was considering the possibility “a lot of people” wanted him to.

He later backtracked on the idea in May.

But just last week, the president posted an AI-edited video on his Truth Social platform of a Time magazine cover with imaginary campaign signs for 2024, 2028, 2032 and far beyond.

The videos were accompanied by other fake clips depicting him as a king and dumping brown liquid on “No Kings” protesters.
