Tributes have begun to pour in for James Harris, a US wrestler better known as Kamala, who died at the age of 70.

The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) announced his death in a statement on Sunday.

It’s not clear when he died or the cause of his death.

Harris was characterised by an African mask, warpaint and a loincloth, which led to his nickname the “Ugandan Giant”.

Prominent for his appearances in the mid-1980s and early 1990s, Kamala would enter the ring barefoot and terrorise his opponents.

The 6ft 7in star was best known for his matches against popular opponents such as Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker and Andre the Giant, among others.

As he grew older, Harris suffered severe health challenges. In 2011, he had his left leg amputated due to diabetes.

“WWE is saddened to learn that James Harris, known to WWE fans as Kamala, has passed away at age 70,” the statement read.

“Under the frightening face paint of Kamala, the 6-foot-7, 380-pound Harris battled the greatest Superstars in sports-entertainment history, including Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker and Andre the Giant.

“He terrorized opponents and thrilled audiences in Mid-South, World Class Championship Wrestling, WCW and WWE until 2006. WWE extends its condolences to Harris’ family, friends and fans.”
