British-Nigeria actor John Boyega, who won the Rising Star award at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, says ongoing conversations about the 2016 “White Oscars” are important.

Popularly known as the BAFTAs, the event took place at the Royal Opera House in London on Sunday, February 14.

Boyega is popular for his roles in the film adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun and 2015 movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Speaking to CNN International on the lack of diversity in the 2016 Oscars, the 23-year-old actor said the conversations that occurred after the nomination list was made public are important.

“I think the conversation that is happening now is very important, I’m glad to play a small part in it,” he said.

Artistes and film enthusiasts have criticised the Oscars, especially the 2016 edition, for being “so white” and lacking in terms of  diversity.

All 20 nominees for the 2016 edition were white.

Taking the stand of some artistes, Boyega said: “All of these conversations need to be heard, the world needs to be portrayed for what it is.

“The diversity has to cut across all boards; Oscars, industry everything.

“We are not going to sit down or back down until that is done.”

Donald Trump, Republican presidential candidate, commented on the issuesaying Oscars belong to the whites because they “do not get any nominations in the BET entertainment awards”.
