Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied the allegation that he approved the sum of $2 billion for the procurement of arms.

Speaking at the National Democratic Institute in Washington on Thursday, Jonathan, who has not made any public comment about the allegations against his government, said “people have been playing politics with serious issues”.

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the arrest of Sambo Dasuki, Jonathan’s national security adviser, for allegedly misappropriating huge sums of money during his time in office but Dasuki denied the allegation and accused the current administration of witch-hunt.

The security chief said Jonathan consented to all the money spent on procurement of arms.

“In a theatrical manner, the presidency fed the public with many allegations against my person and yet-to-be-named former public officers,” he had said in a statement.

“All contracts and accruing payments were with the approval of the president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces…  So, there was due process for every purchase in line with regulations guiding arms procurement for the armed forces.”

However, Jonathan said many of the allegations against his government are untrue.

“Sometimes, I feel sad when people mention these figures,” he said.

“I did not award any $2 billion contract for procurement of weapons. Where did the money come from? I did not award a contract of $2billion for procurement of weapons.

“Corruption is now used for political campaign; during the first visit of President Buhari to the United States he said that about $150billion was lost to corruption, though he didn’t mention me, he said by previous administration.

“The figures are staggering and untrue, another governor said someone stole a million barrels of oil per day.”
