Former President Goodluck Jonathan will lead 33 observers to Tanzania on Sunday ahead of the country’s general election, which will hold on October 25.

Yahya Simba, acting permanent secretary of Tanzania’s ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, disclosed this at a news conference in Dar es Salaam, capital of the country.

According to Simba, while Jonathan will lead the Commonwealth observers, Armando Guebuza, former Mozambican President, will lead the African Union (AU) observer team.

Simba said more than 600 observers will monitor the elections.

“Tanzania is pleased to note that the Post-2015 Development Agenda, inter alia, has taken on board the unfinished business of the MDGs, focusing on trans-formative change, and endeavouring to eradicate poverty in all its forms by 2030,” he said.

This is the first international assignment that Jonathan would perform since he left office in May.

Over 23 million of Tanzania’s 46 million population will participate in the polls to elect a new president, members of parliament and councillors.
