President Goodluck Jonathan will meet the 36 state governors of the federation and security chiefs today for an emergency security meeting to discuss the continuing insecurity in the north-east and decide on the extension of emergency rule in three northern states.
The emergency rule was declared in May last year, as part of government efforts to tackle the violent activities of Boko Haram insurgents. It was extended for another six months in November and is to expire next month.
However, politicians are divided over the need to further extend the emergency rule.
Governors Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe), and Kashim Shettima (Borno) are among those said to be opposing the idea.
The meeting, an enlarged National Security Council (NSC) session, was originally scheduled for 4.00pm on Wednesday, but it was postponed and will now hold this afternoon.
This meeting follows the one held last Thursday, which was snubbed by governors of states controlled by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) on the allegations that they were told the meeting had been cancelled.
