Grace Ike
Grace Ike, chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the federal capital territory (FCT), has advised journalists against using AI as a tool for manipulation.
Speaking on Friday at an event to mark the 2025 World Press Freedom Day, Ike harped on the need to uphold journalism ethics when using AI.
She said the theme for this year, ‘Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media’, reflect the impact of technology in journalism.
She asked journalists to embrace the evolving media landscape driven by technological advancements and to uphold the fundamental principles of press freedom.

“Artificial Intelligence is redefining how we produce and consume news,” she said.
“While it brings efficiency in content creation, enhances audience engagement, and strengthens fact-checking mechanisms, it also raises critical concerns regarding authorship, bias, accountability, and the threat of automated censorship.
“In this brave new world, collaboration among journalists, technologists, regulators, and citizens is essential to ensure that artificial intelligence serves as a tool for progress, not exclusion or manipulation.”

Ike implored journalists to be dedicated to the truth, fairness, and courage, stating that while technologies evolve, the goal of journalism — to inform, enlighten, and serve the public — remains unchanged.
She warned that dependence on AI tools must not compromise journalistic integrity or undermine press freedom.
The chairperson commended civil society organisations and international partners for advocating for media freedom, journalist safety, and access to information.
She said the constitution guarantees press freedom and government must uphold these rights.
