Joyce Banda, former president of the Republic of Malawi, will be in Nigeria for the 2016 annual women’s power lunch organised by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF).

Banda, a politician, and founder/leader of the People’s Party in Malawi, was Malawi’s first female president. She will be the guest speaker at the event, which will hold on July 28.

This year’s theme, ‘Women in solidarity: A new paradigm for inclusion’, will attract a cross generation of audience of women leaders, Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, MMF’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.

The women’s power lunch was established in 2015 by Muhammed-Oyebode.

Muhammed-Oyebode said one of the goals of the foundation is for “women to network across geographies and occupations – to deepen our cooperation and develop new platforms for collaboration in the pursuit of our common goal of defeating patriarchy and misogyny in Africa”.

The first edition of the women’s power lunch featured Graça Machel Mandela, the former first lady of South Africa and Mozambique, as keynote speaker.

The event is free and open to the public but registration is required on the organisation’s website www.mmfnigeria.org/wpl.
