Charles III has been crowned king of England.
The coronation took place on Saturday at London’s Westminster Abbey. The coronation is the first one in England in the last 70 years.
King Charles was presented with the coronation regalia, including the royal robe and stole and was then crowned with the 360-year-old St. Edward’s Crown.
Camilla, queen consort, was also anointed and crowned in a simpler ceremony. However, she was not asked to take an oath.
“I swear to govern the people with justice and mercy, and to uphold the Anglican Church of England and the Presbyterian Church of Scotland,” the King said while taking oath at Westminster Abbey.
The Archbishop of Canterbury then invited the British public and those from other realms, for the first time, to recite a pledge of allegiance to the new monarch and his heirs and successors.
In September 2022, King Charles III was proclaimed as Britain’s new monarch.
His emergence followed the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died at the age of 96.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari departed for the UK on Wednesday to attend the coronation.
While in the UK, the president will also take part in a summit for presidents and heads of government of Commonwealth countries on Friday.
Other officials expected to be in the president’s entourage are Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, director-general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA); and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM).
