Kelechi Iheanacho, Super Eagles forward, scored after his introduction at half time but it was not enough to prevent Pep Guardiola from going five games without a win for only the second time in his career.
Manchester City went into the game against Southampton seeking return to the top of the league with a win or at least a point, but it was the visitors who scored in the 27th minute after a horrible back pass from John Stones allowed Nathan Redmond to round the goalkeeper and slot into an empty net.
Stones thought he had atoned for his error when he prodded the ball home for a free kick, but no sooner had he finished his celebration than he found out that Sergio Aguero had been ruled offside, hence the goal struck off.
Iheanacho eventually evened the scoreline exactly 10 minutes after his entry, but he had Leroy Sane to thank for all the hard work. The 20-year-old German received a long yet pinpoint pass from Fernandinho, and held off his marker to lay a low cross to the path of his fellow 20-year-old.
Not that it looked that easy. Iheanacho still had to show greater strength, awareness and speed than Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, to curl the ball home from close range
