The Kano government has imposed a dawn-to-dusk curfew in the state.

The state government said the curfew was put in place to avoid a breakdown of law and order “following tensions generated from the collation of results of the governorship and state assembly elections”.

Muhammad Garba, the commissioner for information and internal affairs, announced the curfew on Monday morning.

He said the decision was to prevent hoodlums from causing chaos in the “already tensed situation”.

The commissioner asked residents “to remain indoors as security agents would not spare anyone or group bent on causing trouble”.

Abba Yusuf, candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), was earlier declared the winner of the Kano governorship election, defeating Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gawuna, who serves as deputy governor of the state, is Abdullahi Ganduje’s anointed candidate, while Abba Yusuf is keenly supported by Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano state and presidential candidate of the NNPP.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Yusuf the winner at the end of the collation across 44 LGAs in the state.

Ahmad Dokko Ibrahim, the returning officer, announced that Yusuf won the election with 1,019,602 votes, while Gawuna got 890,705 votes.
