John McAfee, founder of McAfee antivirus, has been found dead in a Spanish prison hours after a court allowed for his extradition.

The US entrepreneur was being prosecuted for alleged tax evasion.

He had been detained since October when he was arrested at a Spanish airport on an international arrest warrant.

The 75-year-old was awaiting extradition to the US when his body was found in the prison in Barcelona.

The Catalan Department of Justice said it believes McAfee’s death was caused by suicide.

Local media quoted police sources as saying that prison officials found him hanging in his cell.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Spanish high court authorised McAfee’s extradition to the US where he was facing the tax evasion charges.

Reuters quoted him as saying during one court sitting that the accusations against him were politically motivated.

He linked the charges filed by the US Internal Revenue Service to his failed bid to run for the presidency in 2020.
