Abubakar Nahuche, a national commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has resigned.

INEC announced his resignation on Monday, just moments after Mahmood Yakubu handed over to another commissioner following the expiration of his tenure.

It is unclear if his resignation is connected with the change of power at the commission but Festus Okoye, INEC spokesman, said Nahuche resigned for “personal reasons.”

“INEC National Commissioner and Chairman , Estate, Works and Transport Committee representing North West, Engineer Abubakar Nahuche resigned his appointment on personal reasons and the President has accepted his resignation and thanked him for his services to the nation,” Okoye said in a statement.

President Muhammadu Buhari had sworn in Nahuche and five other commissioners in November 2015.

He graduated from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with a BSc in Electrical Engineering. He later went to Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, USA, where he obtained an MSc in Communications Engineering in 1978.

He served in the Nigerian Army between 1976 and 1983, where he was in charge of fixing communications systems.

He also worked at the Nigerian External Communications Ltd, and later NITEl, where he rose to the position of the chief executive officer (CEO), and at Intercellular PLC.
