The national electricity grid has collapsed, leading to power outage across the country.

Abdulazeez Abdullahi, head of corporate communication of Kaduna Electricity Distribution PLC, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to a post on Kaduna Electric’s Twitter handle, Abdullahi noted that the collapse occurred around 11:26am on Sunday.

“Dear Esteemed Customers, we regret to inform you that the loss of power supply in our franchise — Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states — is as a result of the collapse of the national grid. The collapse occurred at about 11:26 am this morning,” the post read.

“Supply shall be restored as soon as the grid is back up. We regret all inconveniences.”

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) also confirmed the collapse of the grid in a message to customers on Sunday.

“Dear customer, the outage you’re experiencing is due to a system collapse on the National Grid,” it read.

“We are working with our TCN partners to restore supply as soon as possible. Please bear with us.”

The development comes months after the national grid collapsed twice within 24 hours in January 2020.

Meanwhile, Ndidi Mbah, general manager, public affairs of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), who confirmed the collapse of the national grid on Sunday evening, added that power was later restored to some areas.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) regrets to inform electricity consumers nationwide that at 11:25am today, the nation’s electricity grid experienced multiple trippings, which led to the collapse of the system,” Mbah said in a statement.

“TCN has since commenced grid restoration; power has been successfully restored to every part of the country except Calabar, Ugwuaji, Makurdi, Jos, Gombe, Yola and Maiduguri axes. Effort is however ongoing to ensure full restoration nationwide.

“We regret the inconvenience this has caused electricity consumers. Investigation would be conducted to establish the immediate and remote cause(s) of the multiple trippings as soon as the grid is fully restored — considering that the grid has been relatively stable in the last couple of months.”
