The police have reportedly dispersed and arrested supporters of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), who had gathered for a one-million march in Abakaliki, Ebonyi on Saturday.

The supporters of the Obi-dient movement reportedly converged on Pastoral centre, Abakaliki, before setting out for the march to the other parts of the city.

According to the Punch, police officers fired teargas at Obi’s supporters, who were over a thousand.

Steve Ugama, one of the Obi’s supporters at the rally, said the police teargassed and arrested many people before dispersing all of them.

“This is inhuman and undemocratic. We have gathered here this morning for our peaceful march, all of a sudden, the police came and started tear-gassing us and arresting our people,” Ugama said.

“They said we can’t hold the march, because Governor David Umahi asked them to stop us, that we can’t hold it. About four of our colleague have been arrested. We need help here.”

The spokesperson of Ebonyi police command was unreachable for comment.
