Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are currently protesting at Alaba International market in the Ojo local government area of Lagos state.

The protesters are chanting anti-government songs, demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, director of Radio Biafra.

They defied the warning of the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which asked them to steer clear of the state.

Mark Oweregbulem, a trader who deals with sales of computer at the market, said the protesters disrupted activities in the area.

“Alaba is a traffic zone, anytime, any day. Imagine the burden of having people blocking the road. Some of our customers won’t be able to reach us,” he said.

“Well, the police is there but I doubt if they can handle them.”

This is the first time that the group would converge on Lagos since the campaign for the release of Kanu started about three months ago.

They have demonstrated in virtually all the states in the south-east in addition to Rivers state.

Earlier in the day, Shuaibu Usman, magistrate of the chief magistrate court, Wuse zone 2, Abuja, discharged on all counts of criminal conspiracy and ownership of an unlawful society brought against him by the federal government.

“The accused person is hereby discharged and the case struck out,” Usman ruled.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had elected to withdraw the case at the lower court for a higher court, which has jurisdiction to entertain charges bordering on terrorism, to take over.
