The French embassy in Niger Republic has been attacked by protesters.

TheCable had reported how Amadou Abdramane, a colonel-major, announced the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum from office in a late-night address on Wednesday.

Abdramane dissolved the country’s constitution, suspended all institutions and closed the borders.

In what appeared like a protest against the intervention of the French government in Niger, the supporters of the junta marched through the streets of Niamey, the country’s capital, waving Russian flags and chanting the name of Vladimir Putin, the Russian president and forcefully denouncing former colonial power, France.

On Saturday, Josep Borrell, the European Union (EU) high representative, said the EU does not recognise and will not recognise the authorities resulting from the coup in Niger.

He had said that Bazoum, the displaced president, was democratically elected and remains the only legitimate president of Niger.

Meanwhile, leaders of the states in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), are currently meeting with President Bola Tinubu, the chairman of a sub-regional body, over the development in Niger Republic.
