SSANU, NASU suspend strike — after three weeks

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have suspended their national strike after three-week of academic disruption.

On February 5, the joint committee of both unions initiated a strike over minimum wage arrears and other issues.

This came after a three-day nationwide protest and a 14-day notice to the federal government to act on its demands.

But, on Thursday, the joint leadership of both unions suspended the strike after a meeting with branch chairmen.

At the meeting, it is gathered that NASU and SSANU reached a consensus and signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the federal government with identified timelines at which their demands are to be acted upon.

It is expected that the suspension will take effect from 12 am on February 26 following the resolve of all branches.

TheCable had earlier reported how the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had charged the federal government on the need to pay attention to the pressing needs of tertiary institutions and avert recurrent strikes.

“There is no right-thinking human being that will be comfortable with such recurring strikes always taking the students out of school. It has a lot of security implications when people are idle and not working,” NANS had stated.
