Three killed as gunmen attack INEC HQ in Imo

Gunmen have attacked the head office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

The gunmen were said to have launched the attack on Monday morning.

They attacked the building with locally-made explosives, which razed some sections of the INEC office.

TheCable understands that the police officers stationed at the office repelled the gunmen.

Three of the gunmen were said to have been killed during the attack.

According to a witness, “one of the hoodlums was captured alive”.

Mike Abattam, the Imo police spokesperson, said two firebombs were recovered from the scene.

He said: “We killed three of the attackers and recovered three AK47 rifles and pump action guns. We also recovered two explosives and three of their vehicles.”

Over the past few days, INEC offices in Imo and other parts of the south-east have come under attack, leading to the destruction of the commission’s properties.

On December 1, the INEC office in Orlu LGA of Imo was razed by gunmen.

On December 4, another INEC office in Oru west LGA was attacked by gunmen.
