Tinubu asks senate to confirm new service chiefs

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the senate’s confirmation of the newly appointed service chiefs.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the Tinubu’s letter during Tuesday’s plenary.

Tinubu nominated Olufemi Oluyede as chief of defence staff; Waheedi Shaibu as chief of army staff; Idi Abbas as chief of naval staff; Kennedy Aneke as chief of air staff; and Emmanuel Undiendeye as chief of defence intelligence.

In the correspondence, Tinubu urged the senate to give “expeditious consideration” to the appointments.

Their confirmation is expected to strengthen the administration’s ongoing security reforms and enhance inter-agency coordination in the fight against insurgency, banditry, and other threats.

Akpabio referred the president’s request to the committee of the whole for screening and confirmation, scheduled to hold on Wednesday.

“I plead with distinguished senators to reconsider. If it is agreed by the Senate, I would like to do it tomorrow so that they can go straight and start work — so we don’t leave any gap in security,” he said.

The lawmakers unanimously agreed to the request when Akpabio put the question to a voice vote.
