Justice Research Institute (JRI), an organisation that focuses on research and critical information development, will host a webinar appraising Nigeria’s procedure for appointment of judges.
The online seminar has as its theme, “Selection and Appointment of Judges: Lessons for Nigeria”, and will take place on August 8, 2020 from 11am.
The lead speaker for this edition is Anne Rafferty, chair of the Judicial College, Royal Courts of Justice, while Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, chief justice of Ghana and Patrick Lumumba will provide perspectives on Ghanaian and Kenyan experiences.
The panellists will appraise Nigeria’s procedure for the appointment of judges vis-a-vis the procedure in the United Kingdom, with experience sharing from Ghana and Kenya.
The guest of honour is Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, while special guests include Senate President Ahmed Lawan; Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives, and Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, chief justice of Nigeria.
Other speakers at the webinar include Abubakar Malami, attorney-general general of the federation and minister of justice; Amina Augie, justice of the supreme court of Nigeria; Monica Dongban-Mensem, president of the court of appeal, and Konyinsola Ajayi, managing partner, Olaniwun Ajayi LP.
The webinar is an open-access virtual roundtable which will be guided by two moderators, Osaro Eghobamien, managing partner, Perchstone and Graeys, and Ayo Atsenuwa, professor of Law, University of Lagos.
