The Kaduna chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has commended Uba Sani, the state governor, for approving the implementation of the consolidated health salary structure (CONHESS).

The union also lauded the governor for extending the consolidated medical salary structure (CONMESS) to its members.

A letter signed by Ishaku Yakubu and Christiana Bawa, the NANNM state chairman and secretary, said the decision has renewed the confidence of health workers in the administration.

“The singular act of magnanimity and fairness has rekindled the hope of many dedicated nurses in your administration,” the letter reads.

The NANNM added that the move reflects Sani’s commitment to the welfare of nurses and other health workers, while also strengthening the state’s healthcare delivery system.

The association acknowledged the implementation of both CONHESS and CONMESS came at a time of competing demands on state resources, but noted that the governor “prioritised the well-being of health workers”.

The nurses and midwives pledged continued loyalty and professionalism in contributing to what they described as the governor’s transformative health sector agenda.

“This visionary leadership has boosted morale, improved productivity and positioned Kaduna state as a model of labour-friendly governance,” the union said.

CONHESS and CONMESS are frameworks the federal government created to harmonise and standardise how health workers are paid in Nigeria.

They were designed to create a uniform, more attractive pay system to reduce to reduce the number of doctors leaving Nigeria for better jobs abroad.

Even though these salary structures are national, states often delay or avoid implementing them because of budget constraints.

By approving both, Sani is signalling that Kaduna will pay its health workers in line with the federal structure.
