The Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions of Kaduna State (JUTIKS) has threatened to embark on strike if the government fails to resolve outstanding issues.

The decision was contained in a statement issued by Noah Danlami, the union chairman, on Wednesday.

Danlami alleged that the state government has failed to solve lingering issues that have affected the workers for years due to “lack of political will and misplacement of priority”.

The tertiary institution workers demanded that the retirement age be pegged at 65 years, and also requested for an increase in staff strength to match the students’ population across institutions.

Some of the demands in the statement are: “Immediate implementation of the appropriate salary structures in all our tertiary institutions; implement 65-year retirement age without further delay, and increase the staff strength in our tertiary institutions, especially academic staff, in commensurate with the students’ population.”

The union also described the mass sacking of workers in the state by the state government as “very unfortunate and untimely”, adding that the government needs to concentrate on tackling security and putting an end to poverty.

Meanwhile, the state has maintained that the recent sack of workers is as a result of paucity of funds.
