Staff of the Kaduna State Water Corporation (KADSWAC) have called off their strike action following intervention by Uba Sani, governor of the state.

The KADSWAC workers embarked on the strike to protest the non-payment of their salaries for seven months.

Speaking on the development, Ibrahim Hamza, Kaduna commissioner for public works and infrastructure, said the governor has approved the payment of two months salaries to the workers.

Hamza added that funds for the purchase of chemicals required for water treatment have also been approved.

The commissioner said KADSWAC is an entity of its own and is expected to generate its revenue for its operational activities and payment of salaries.

“KADSWAC is an entity of its own. It is supposed to generate its own revenue and use it to pay salaries and other operational activities,” Hamza said.

“But that has not been able to sustain the corporation fully. What they generate is far below what they can cater for their own salary.”

The commissioner also urged residents of the state to promptly pay their water bills and report any case of water facility vandalism to the appropriate authorities to safeguard the government’s efforts in the water sector.

On his part, Aminu Soba, the acting managing-director of KADSWAC, commended the governor for his swift intervention and assistance.

He added that plans have been outlined to prevent future strike actions.

“We have outlined plans to prevent future strike actions by procuring water treatment chemicals with the assistance of Governor Uba Sani’s administration, to ensure the purification of water for the residents of the state,” Soba said.
