Members of the Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed the state Rape Prohibition Bill 2014 into law.
The law provides a maximum of life sentence for convicted rapists, and stipulates an additional fine of N200, 000.
Clerk of the house, Alhaji Lawal Badamasi, said the law also requires the court to demand compensations for rape victims, while provisions were also made for homosexuals and lesbians in the law.
“Whoever has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of 14 years, and shall also be liable to a fine of N50, 000,” he said.
“And any woman who has a feeling of love for another woman or girl, and goes ahead to employ the means of satisfying that passion, either through bodily contact or otherwise with or without consent in order to drive sexual pleasure, is said to have committed lesbianism, and shall be imprisoned for a term of 14 years and shall be liable to a fine of N50,000.”
Meanwhile, the assembly confirmed the appointment of 38 local council secretaries, and deferred consideration of those for Gwale, Dala, Minjibir, Tsanyawa, Dawakin Tofa and Garun Malam, whose details it hadn’t yet received.
The house, which proceeded on recess for the Ramadan season, is expected to resume on August 11.
