The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano says it received 158 complaints on alleged human rights abuses in the state in January 2024.

Shehu Abdullahi, the NHRC’s coordinator in the state, disclosed this during an interview with NAN on Thursday.

He said 121 of the 158 cases had been attended to, while the remaining 37 are pending.

According to Abdullahi, 23 of the cases were on women rights abuses and 28 were on abandonment of family responsibilities, sexual and domestic violence.

“The remaining 107 cases received during the period under review were on child labour, unlawful arrests, detention and torture,” Abdullahi said.

He added that the commission mediated in some marital issues between some couples and families, and advised residents to make use of the services of the commission to resolve issues before they degenerate into full-blown conflict.
