Cost of cooking gas has shot up by about 38 per cent in Kano, prompting outcry by households who rely on it for cooking.

Survey by NAN indicated that the cost of refilling a 12kg cylinder had risen from between N2,700 and N3,000, to a minimum of N3,400

Refilling a 6kg cylinder now costs N1800, as against the former price of between N1300 and N1,500.

The survey further showed that a 25kg cylinder, which used to cost N5,400, is now being sold at N7,200, just as the cost of refilling 5kg cylinder, rose to N1,500, as against the former price of N1,200.

Some people told NAN that the hike took them by surprise.

Isa Ali, a businessman, said the increase in price was unbearable to many families.

He therefore called on government to look into the issue with a view to bringing down the price.

Ola Adeniji, a restaurant operator, expressed concern over the price hike, saying the situation had negatively affected his business.

“We used to pay N5, 400 to refill 12kg cylinder but now we have to refill it at N7, 200,” he lamented.

Agnes Thomas, a housewife, noted that people were fast running out of alternatives, considering that the price of kerosene was also increasing on a daily basis.

“We want the government to take urgent steps to address the situation,” she pleaded.
