Kano state will receive doses of the AstraZeneca COVID vaccine on Tuesday.
This was disclosed by Tijjani Hussaini, the state coordinator of the technical response team, in an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday.
“Kano is ready to receive the vaccine. We were informed by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) that Kano would receive its own consignment of COVID-19 vaccine today. We were expected to have it yesterday but we are going to receive it today,” he said.
He said the state was 70 percent ready to begin the rollout and will begin vaccinations within one week of receiving the vaccine.
He added that the state government had prepared 509 facilities where vaccinations would take place.
“If you look at our overall preparation to begin the rollout, we’ll say we’re about 70 percent ready. Within the next one week, Kano will be ready to begin the vaccination across the state,” he said.
“Again we have prepared over this period of time, 509 facilities, to the sites where vaccination is going to take place.”
On Monday, Ogun became the first state in Nigeria to receive the vaccine, having met the requirements for disbursement.
On March 2, the long-awaited vaccine arrived in the country courtesy of the WHO-led COVAX facility, which donated 3,924,000 doses to Nigeria.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) gave the final approval for use of the doses in Nigeria, hours before the launch of vaccination.
Afterwards, Nigeria commenced its COVID-19 vaccination with frontline health workers in Abuja last Friday.
