Kano state government has approved the reopening of schools in the state from August 10.

Muhammad Sanusi Kiru, the commissioner for education, announced the decision at a media briefing on Monday.

The commissioner also directed all principals to make arrangements to receive SSS 3 boarding students on August 9, while day students are expected to resume on August 10, 2020.

The resumption is only for students in graduating classes who are preparing for examinations.

“All educational establishments are to follow the guidelines for the reopening,” Kiru said.

He also added that the ministry of environment in collaboration with its education counterpart has begun disinfecting schools in preparation for the resumption.

Schools across Nigeria were shut down in March 2020 in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, after four months, the federal government announced resumption for students in graduating classes, and asked schools to ensure strict compliance with the guidelines issued by the ministry of education to prevent spread of the virus.

The decision was reached on July 27 at a virtual consultative meeting between the federal ministry of education, commissioners for education of the 36 states, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT), proprietors of private schools, and chief executives of examination bodies.

Unity colleges across the country are expected to resume on August 4, in preparation for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) exercise scheduled to begin on August 17, 2020.
