The Katsina state government has announced plans to roll out hybrid buses to promote eco-friendly transportation and reduce commuting costs.

The Katsina state executive council approved the initiative on September 25.

Sani Ingawa, commissioner for works and housing, had said the procurement of 30 hybrid buses, which run on both diesel and electricity, shows the administration’s commitment to lowering environmental emissions and cutting transportation expenses.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday in Abuja, Wei Yanbin, project manager at Zhong Tong Bus, said the 30 city buses designated for the project’s first phase will be delivered within six months.

Yanbin said the company will construct three bus terminals and 60 bus stops along designated routes in the state.

“This project will commence this October and be delivered within six months,” Yanbin said.

He explained that the buses use diesel and electric power to reduce fuel consumption and cut emissions, noting that each can carry between 45 and 55 passengers.

Oshi Bernard, a partner of Zhong Tong Bus, described the initiative as a “sustainable”, climate-friendly transportation project.

Bernard described Dikko Radda, governor of Katsina state, as “hard-working, industrious, focused, and dedicated,” adding that the project aligns with the administration’s plans to enhance living standards and expand opportunities for youth in Katsina state.

The buses will operate on key routes in Katsina, Daura, and Funtua, with plans to expand across the state.
