Katsina United fined N9m over fans’ assault of Barau players

Katsina United palyed Barau FC at the home in their NPFL match on Saturday

The board of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has fined Katsina United N9 million for several rule breaches during their match against Barau FC.

On Saturday, Ahmad Gwale, Barau FC’s director of media operations, claimed Nana Abraham, the club’s player, was stabbed in the neck by a pitch invader during the match, which ended 1-1 at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.

The Barau FC spokesperson said “one person from the Katsina United bench or one of their fans” invaded the pitch and struck Abraham on the neck with “something like a sharp object”.
However, Katsina United denied that any of the club’s supporters invaded the pitch and attacked the Barau FC player during the match.
In its ruling on the incident on Sunday, NPFL said Katsina “failed to ensure proper conduct of their supporters, leading to the harassment of Barau FC players and match officials”.
The league body added that supporters of the home team threw harmful objects onto the pitch, resulting in the injuries of Barau FC players.
“The club have been fined N1m each for throwing objects towards the pitch, failing to ensure proper conduct of their supporters & bringing the game into disrepute, totalling N3m,” the statement reads.
“A N2m fine has also been placed on Katsina Utd for failing to provide adequate & effective security.
“The club will further pay N2m each as compensation for treatment of injuries and damages to the away team’s buses; and for holding the match officials and away team hostage for hours after the match, totalling N4m.”
Katsina United are also to play “all their subsequent home matches at the stadium in Jos and behind closed doors”.
