Barely three days after the supreme court sacked Garba Umar as acting governor of Taraba state, Josiah Kente, the speaker of the state house of assembly, has resigned.
Kente assumed office exactly a year ago, when Haruna Tsokwa, the then speaker, died.
He was among the members of the assembly who impeached Sanni Danladi, who has just been reinstated as the acting governor of the state.
In a letter addressed to the clerk of the house, Kente said his resignation was based on personal reasons.
“I write to tender my resignation as the speaker of the Taraba state house of assembly, from today, the 24th day of November, 2014,” the letter read.
“My resignation is personal. I want to seek this opportunity to thank members of the seventh assembly for giving me the opportunity to serve.”
The state’s political terrain has witnessed uncertainties in recent times. From the controversial impeachment of Danladi in 2012, to the involvement of Danbaba Suntai, the governor, in a fatal accident and the power tussle that followed suit.
The assembly has appointed Mark Useni as the new speaker.
Useni’s appointment came as a result of a motion moved by Kizito Bonzena and seconded by Hamman Adama, both of Zing and Bali constituencies.
