President Uhuru Kenyatta has been declared winner of Kenya’s presidential election.

Announcing results on Friday evening, Wafula Chebukati, chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), said Kenyatta garnered 54.3 percent of the votes to defeat Raila Odinga, his rival, who polled 44.7%.

“Countries around the world have been watching us closely,” Chebukati said, adding that he was “confident” that the manner the election was conducted was “fair and credible”.

The announcement of the results was delayed for hours, after election officials said they needed time to review some documents from some polling districts.

The opposition rejected the results even before they were declared.

Kenyatta first took office in 2013, with his victory, he would be in power for the next five years.

After the announcement, Kenyatta called for unity, telling opposition supporters: “I reach out to you… We are all citizens of the same republic.
